![]() Both routes are roughly the same distance but the Kedron option is much steeper and therefore more difficult. The other option is to take the Kedron Flume Trail behind the Willey House Cafe on Route 302 1.3 miles up to the Appalachian Trail Junction. One option is to start at the Ripley Falls trailhead and take the Appalachian Trail junction up to Ethan Pond 0.2 miles in. Located adjacent to the Willey House Historic Site, the Kedron Flume Trail is a short but steep climb up to a small waterfall, located along the sidewall of Crawford Notch. There are two ways to access this trail from Crawford Notch State Park. Kedron Flume is one of several picturesque hikes in Crawford Notch which sports some of the nicest waterfall hikes in the White Mountains. Overall it’s a great spot to stop for lunch or a snack and if you are geared up for a longer journey there is an AMC shelter and campsite area located just behind the pond that is available for overnight use. The lake itself has some great big rocks where you can sit and enjoy a grand sweeping view of the Pemigewasset Wilderness. One part of this trail in particular takes you through a beautiful meadow where wildflowers bloom and you can hear green frogs singing the day away. Ethan Pond is one of the more accessible lakes in the area and it’s a relatively moderate hike that crosses some very nice sections of the Appalachian Trail. Beginning from behind the historic Willey House, the Kedron Flume Trail climbs 0.2 miles gradually to the Conway Scenic Railroad. These little backcountry jewels sit nestled among the peaks and are prime spots for hikers, backpackers, and anglers alike. The Pemigewasset Wilderness has a plethora of small alpine lakes. The trail turns/switchbacks some and these turns can be obscure, leaving you wondering where the trail disappeared to in the snow but the blazing is relatively frequent compared to most trails in the Whites so just keep an eye out and pay attention. We were actually surprised to see so many cars at Zealand Trailhead when we dropped Katie’s car off there in the morning… But, then remembered it was Saturday and the road JUST opened so folks had been itching to get there without the roadwalk.Īll in all it was a great day and I would 100% hike this route again or any section of it. Once we got onto Zealand Trail we saw a few more hikers as the hikes to Zealand Falls and Zealand are much more popular. All of the vert in this hike was actually before Ethan Pond, which timed out nicely with the temperature creeping up throughout the day. This trail is strenuous and steep, but relatively quick to the summit. This is a 5.4 mile round trip hike (8.4 with Tom & Field). The trail actually crosses the falls, which is NOT something I would have wanted to attempt to do yesterday so I’m glad that wasn’t the plan.įrom here we had ~ 3.75 miles left to our hike, all flat or downhill. We met a solo backpacker who was hanging out at the Ethan Pond shelter when we took the little (0.1 mile) spur trail to Ethan Pond. Don’t get me wrong, I love the hiking community and seeing folks out on trail getting in a dose of nature – but humanless days are also so lovely and quiet. It was mostly cloudy in Crawford Notch when we got to the Kedron Flume Trailhead. Between the start of our hike and where Ethan Pond Trail meets Zealand Trail we saw one other hiker.
