I downloaded my entire Tidal library (about 8,000 songs) in just a few short hours. Like, iPad Pro ($800) connection speed great. I don't know the exact part number that Amazon used for their WiFi antennas, but they're good. Plus, with the app pinning feature - I can pin Tidal and the Fire HD literally becomes a Tidal tablet no alerts, no distractions, it even gets rid of the notification bar at the top and puts Tidal full screen (downside of that is you don't see your battery percentage, but its a worthy loss). Unlike Google which constantly tries to jam the whole Google services down your throat (like, "hey, we're going to preload your phone/DAP with probably about a dozen totally useless Google apps that you can't uninstall and they're just always going to be running in the background if that's cool"), Amazon is like "Yeah, we'll give you what you need to get started and some apps will stay on the device so you don't screw something up, but we'll be quiet and if you need anything we'll just be waiting over here". I just downloaded APK pure and called it a day. I don't use any of the Amazon stuff (like the app store) on it. It works with USB-DACs without the need of some sort of special cable or adapter. ~$170 after ad removal, case, and 256GB microSD card. But then I thought, I could try one last thing - the Fire HD8. Thought that maybe I'd get something more premium like the R6 Pro, the Sony NX507, or maybe even full send it to the FiiO M15. ![]() Then, a couple weeks ago (after having gone several months with just the iPhone) I decided I really did need (want) a DAP. Long story short, it proved more of an annoyance than a tool so I sold it. Problem is, I didn't have a SIM card because I wasn't interested in using it as a phone, but as a DAP. Plus, it constantly (and I mean constantly) alerted me to put the SIM card in. Couldn't find screen protectors that fit right and it was very limited on case variety. It had an all glass design and was curved on all edges so it was like holding a bar of soap - couldn't set it on anything (couldn't stack it either) or it'd either a) scratch, or b) slide off. Unfortunately, and now I'm nitpicking, it proved to be mildly frustrating to use. Took a different route, bought a used LG ThinQ G8 because it had expandable memory, LG's quad DAC, and a decently snappy UI/OS. The DAC on the M6 is, well, not great and I was all around disappointed (but its also a decently cheap DAP). If I remember correctly, the M6 does not USB out so you have to rely on the audio in/out to connect it to the Q5s. Tried the FiiO M6 after that (after all, I had the BTR5 and Q5s at the time so I really only just needed a source), but was not a fan. M11 was nice, but had the same ghosting issue right out of the box and for $400, I wasn't a fan of that. I tried the M11 Pro - got a unit with a defective screen (ghosting right out of the box), decided to save $250 and get the M11. I love the iPhone Pro 11, but not as a music source. Finding replacement/upgrade lightning cables that are lightning to type-C (or microUSB) and OTG & MFi compatible are a huge pain which means I have to rely on the lightning camera adapter. On top of that, I've got the BTR5 and Q5s which can only use the AAC codec. I've been using Tidal on my phone, but it chews through my cellular data because I don't have the storage space to download all my favorite albums/playlists. in exchange for a snappy UI that integrates well with my iPad, computer, etc. ![]() ![]() ![]() How did I get here? I'm a long time iPhone user which means I've forfeited things like expandable memory, LDAC, type-C connectors, etc. I typically frequent the introduction/suggestions section, but thought I'd pop over here to share my thoughts on an unconventional music source that I'm actually quite pleased with - the 10th Gen Kindle Fire HD8.
